wk.7-14 quest. #3
3) In the book, powerless stereotypes caught my attention. Sex-role stereotyping is definitely an issue. I work at a daycare facility with both men and woman teachers, and still after of a year of working together the male teachers continue to stereotype. They always feel that we are better at organizing crafts and being sensitive to the children. The male teachers usually always opt to go monitor outside play time, while the female teachers are inside working with the children on art projects and learning ABC’s. They somehow also usually never offer to clean up, or help with the inside activities. And when we discuss this problem in meetings, they say we just usually get to the cleaning and projects first?? Well, I somehow think they just perceive they think its out role, and that we would be better suited for the particular task. This is just them stereotyping, and I’m sure woman do this all the time as well.

PPAT,
ReplyDeleteYou give an excellent example of how sex-role stereotyping is still prevalent in today's society. I believe that the women should be allowed to coordinate any of the task because they are able to, not because of their gender. The fact that this happens on a regular occasion would have me worried. It also shocks me how the company put stereotypes on males/females, and will not admit to it. This could be that they truly believe that they are not stereotyping by gender, or that they do know but will not acknowledge it. I find it odd that men always get to the projects first. Are the men faster? Bringing this up at a work meeting is a good way for others to find out about the problem, and hopefully deal with it.

ReplyDeletePPAT,
ReplyDeleteIt was interesting to read your post. I agree with you that sex-role stereotype is an issue and there are a lot of factors contributing to it. I believe men and woman are different in terms of how they behave, in the interests they express, and biologically. Even though certain behaviors are natural difference, Cultural background has the most influential function in contributing to the issue. Sex-role stereotype fosters “expectations that men will act like leaders and woman will act like subordinates.” If we are blinded by our stereotypes, we defiantly are going to miss out the creativity and the contribution we get from both cultures.
