quest. 2 wk 7-13
2) The functions of norms in my small group at my work place are more relaxed then most work places. Or more relaxed then other places I have worked. Norms are the expectations of behavior patterns for the group collectively. At my work place it is not a huge issue if you arrive late to work, or have to take the day off for personal reasons. The boss understands, if you just talk to her about the situation. She views her staff more as a family then a structured work place. But other behaviors are enforced, when dealing with children especially there are certain norms our society has, and at my work place those generally all apply. I experienced a violation of a norm when sister recently got engaged during winter break. She had him come over and open presents with us Christmas morning, and that is usually involves just our immediate family. It was a little different being open with the change. But once we started opening gifts it became easier and more comfortable.

PPat, What a great place to work! I liked that you explained where you work as a example of violation of norms. I would love to work somewhere where I was able to take the day off without feeling like I would come back to a pink slip. At my work there are so many different norms that can be easily violated, I would love to be somewhere that things were a little more flexible. I think when there are less strict norms in the work place, and there are good employees, generally the work environment is a lot more comfortable and productive for everyone.
